Time to open the piggy bank! You have a mixture of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, with at least four of each kind. There are exactly 100 coins with a total value of $2.72. How many of each coin do you have?
You have 82 pennies, 10 nickels, 4 dimes and 4 quarters.
To begin, the problem says you already have 4 of each coin. For quarters, this adds up to $1.00 already, so you may reason that you will not have any more quarters.
So 4 pennies, 4 nickels, 4 dimes and 4 quarters adds up to 16 coins and $1.64. This leaves 84 coins to create the other $1.08. Working methodically, you can determine that using any more dimes creates an impossible coin count, so therefore the remaining money is made up of pennies and nickels only. Simple math with the nickels will lead to the answer. 2 nickels is 10 ¢, which leaves 98 ¢ and 98 pennies, so this is incorrect. And so on until you reach the 6 nickels and 78 pennies, which adds up to the $1.08. Do not forget to add on the original 4 of each coin to get your totals!
